Summer Beauty Trends!

Like with fashion trends, beauty trends come and go as the seasons change. This summer, it's all about "au naturale" and going bare! Here are some of the hottest looks for this summer along with some tips on how to achieve them!

1. Mermaid Waves
  • After washing your hair, put mousse while your hair is upside-down
  • Then shake your hair a little bit and then braid it while it's still wet (2 or more depending on the amount of volume and/or texture you want)
  • Sleep with it and then take out the braids in the morning
  • Add some serum if there is frizz
2. Thick luxurious brows
  • Don't go all crazy with your tweezers! The more you pluck, the more the eyebrow follicles begin to stop growing hair!
  • If you have a round face, emphasize an arch to draw attention away from your face width
  • If you have a long face, don't emphasize the arch rather make them flatter
  • If you have an angular face, rounder eyebrows will soften your face shape
  • To get the perfect arch learn how to fill in brows watch this video!
3. Winged Liner (my fave)
  • Use either a liquid liner with a thin brush or a gel pot liner with an angled brush depending on whats easier for you
  • Follow the natural shape of your eyes and try to get as close to the lashline as possible
  • You may even want to thicken the line as you go out!
  • Don't forget that a q-tip is your best-friend
4. Lip-stains (plum, cherry, and coral shades)
  •  My Favorites: SmashBox Limitless Lip Stain & Color Seal Balm in Guava,  Josie Maran Magic Marker Lip & Cheek Stain in Tango, Stila Coconut Crush Lip & Cheek Stain
5. Braids

6. Tinted Moisturizer, or nothing at all!
  • My Favorites: Mac Studio Moisture Tint with SPF 15, Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer, Mary Kay Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 20

May Favorites!!

Well I know this is kind of early, but I vowed not to go makeup shopping or buying anything else for the rest of the month as I recently had a splurge-attack at MAC. Anyhow, haven't done one of these posts in a while as there generally wasn't anything I absolutely gushed over for an entire month. So, I decided why not do one earlier this month! Some of these items are not necessarily beauty related, but I find them the most fun! Anyways, what's so great about tinted-moisturizer? and this is what I shall start with..

My first favorite for the month of May would have to be MAC's SPF 15 Studio Moisture Tint (tinted moisturizer for those of you who don't speak MAC. Just kidding, I don't either I was just reading it off the plastic box) in shade medium. I really really love this tinted moisturizer because I am one to definitely go bare almost everyday. I usually just put on a daily aveeno moisturizer with SPF 15, then run out of the house for my classes, but this tinted moisturizer really comes in handy for those days where I break out or have redness and just want to look really put together. For me, this product is like a foundation because I don't have that huge of a problem with my skin (*knock on wood*) and putting on a foundation would be like getting a face transplant as nobody would probably recognize me. Anyhoo, it's great for the summertime when you need some light coverage and moisture (in my case all year), but it doesn't make your skin oily or drying.
The next item I became completely obsessed with happens to be a MAC product as well (I know I know I went a little crazy this time at the counter...)! I picked up the MAC black gel eyeliner, which came in a little pot, but unfortunately no little brush. Thankfully I already had my own slanted eyeliner brush, but I've been seriously loving this product ever since I got it. Every time I had been looking for a good gel eyeliner I couldn't find anything, especially at my drugstore (my luck), so I resorted to MAC, which definitely tends to be pricier. For me, using a gel eyeliner is much easier than a pencil or liquid liner because you can still get a really precise line, without nearly poking yourself in the eye. I also have been doing a lot of winged-liner looks, so using gel with a slanted brush really helps achieve that kind of look!
My third item is something a lot of people either or either love, which happens to be Forever21 polishes. Generally speaking, when you think of buying a beauty item from there and you see how cheap it is, you know that it was probably cheaply made for a fraction of a penny in some run-down factory. However, I bravely decided to try out their nail polishes, being tempted as well while waiting in line to pay, and was pleasantly surprised. I'm not saying that their other beauty products are just as good because to be quite honest I'm terrified to try them out, but their nail polishes really surprised me in a good way. I picked up a baby pink, bright magenta, caramel nude, forest green, and plain base coat color. Unfortunately they don't really have amazing names for their colors like Essie or  OPI (well what do ya expect? It's f21 for crying out loud), but their website has a variety of different colors to choose from. I really loved the fact that they went on smoothly and stayed on for a a few days. They definitely need reapplying however if you want a week good lasting manicure. Furthermore, I would highly recommend applying it in a bathroom or somewhere with many open windows, as these polishes have a very harsh smell.

Out of all the other beauty items I contemplated putting in my favorites for this month I would have to say that hands down, Cetaphil facial cleanser will always creep its way back in. I have said this over and over again that getting a good facial routine starts by cleansing in the morning and in the night. But even more so than that finding a GOOD cleanser that doesn't leave your face flaky, dry, and gross is just as important. Cetaphil is my all time favorite cleanser! It doesn't leave my face dry or oily and it really cleans like it's supposed to. I wish I had one of those handy dandy expensive clairosonic gadgets that I can use my cetaphil cleanser with, but its really too expensive for me. To get similar results, I just use my Cetaphil cleanser and massage it onto my face to get the blood flowing. I think it's great and it really makes my face soft and clean without smelling like gross chemicals or anything like that. LOVE IT!
This month hasn't really just been all about cleansing, putting on eyeliner, and being obsessed with MAC. I just started a new book called The Truth Teller's Lie, by Sophie Hannah, which I absolutely adore and I can't wait to find out what happens next! I don't want to spoil anything for those of you interested, but based on the synopsis, it's about this young stalker woman named Naomi who has a lot of secrets about her life and gets involved with a married man named Robert. One day, Robert disappears and Naomi must face the wife as well as the police. It's a thriller book that deals with her traumatic past and psychopathic ways of going about. I seriously can't put this book down and I'm dying to know what happened to Robert ! AHH!
(before I ripped it out of my book-shelf)

I couldn't refrain from putting this last one in my favorites list because it was oh-so tempting, literally! I have been seriously obsessed with Red Velvet cupcakes this month because of all the bake-sales that have been going around in my school. The white cream-cheese frosting, the soft and smooth texture, and the bright red color...to-die for! I think they're great for any charity bake sale event, birthday party, gift, or just dessert when nobody's looking (hehe). Here's a great recipe by Paula Dean that will surely get your mouth watering, as it just did to mine.

What were your favorites of this month? Did any of you have creepy obsessions with a dessert item like me?

Tips for Finding the Right Shade of Lipstick!

Finding the right lipstick shade can be daunting when you're faced with a whole counter of ranging colors, but don't let that scare you. The first thing you must do to help figure out what shades best suit you, is to pick a day where you're not in a rush and visit your favorite beauty counter. From there you can learn how to test different colors and see which ones suit you more and look really flattering for future purchases. These are just some tips and guidelines! You don't necessarily have to follow them as in beauty and fashion there really are no rules, but if you're struggling to find a lipstick that is sophisticated and matches you, this is a good place to start.
TIPS:
  • According to Makeup artist, Bobbi Brown, the shade that generally flatters you the most is one or two shades darker than your natural lip color. When you go to your beauty counter, test a few out and see which ones are one or two shades darker.
  • If you normally don't go to MAC, Chanel, Dior (etc.) and you generally opt for drugstore or supermarket lipsticks like at walmart, you know that most of the time there isn't a tester. Hold up the color of the shade on the box near your lips in front of a mirror (try to do so in sunlight). It's not the most accurate way, but you could always just say the lipstick gave you an allergic reaction and return it if it ends up not to your liking (works like a charm...they normally send it back to the manufacturer, so don't think that they're going to repackage it or anything like that..ew!)
  •  Now, when picking a red lipstick the whole pick two shades darker trick doesn't really work. To find an awesome lipstick, it's best to go based off of skintone. Pink Skinned girls should get cherry red, olive skin can wear fire-engine red, while those with darker skin look best in deep reds.
  • To pick the right nude color, keep in mind that you want to go relatively close to your natural pigmentation. Great blog-post on how to get your perfect nude color here!
  • To apply really bright and daring colors like hot pink, red, and orange, it's best to use a lipbrush!
  • To keep lipstick last longer, get a lipliner as a base and fill in your lips before using the lipstick.
  • If you find a lipstick you hate, try mixing it with other lipsticks you have. You can come up with a really great color just by mixing. To tone down bright lipstick, you could put a darker liner underneath.
  • Lipstick can also be used for cheek stains! If you find a really pretty rosy color, this can act as a blush! Perfect for spring-time or when you're just running out of the house!
Based on Skin Tone:
Women with Fair Skin look great in nudes in a slight apricot shade, light corals, and pinks. They should stay away from browns, because those can look drab!
Women with Medium Skin look great in roses, mauves, and berries. To pick a nice red if you are Medium Skin toned, opt for a deep burgundy!
Women with Dark Skin look great in in browns and purples. For daytime, try a light caramel shade, while at night time wear a deep plum or wine color!

hope this helped :)

Hair & Hair Color Challenges

HCC Email/Question #6

Dear Hair Color Corner
About two week ago I changed my hair color from medium blonde (highlights) to a chocolate brown, I had been thinking about doing that for some time, I found that my highlights were starting to dry my hair so I thought it would be a good time to change. Well I hate it and I feel its way to dark, so I went back to my stylist and asked if he could do something, anything, he said NO because in order to change it back he would have to bleach my hair and that it would break off. I do understand what he is trying to tell me and it was my decision to go dark but the color I got does not seem to be a chocolate brown but rather a dull flat brown. Is there something that can be done? I would be ok with it if it wasn’t so dull and lifeless looking.
Jennifer

This is a classic case of perhaps 1/ the stylist did not first fill your hair which means in order to change already lightened hair we need to put back a gold/orange tone so the new color does not go flat, 2/ there was a miscommunication between both of you in the consultation process. The truth is I might be speculating because I cannot see your hair however your stylist might also be right with the breakage aspect, 80% of the time when there is a situation like yours the hair does dry up when you re-do highlights so if it was dry to begin with chances are he is right. This was done only 2 weeks ago I suggest you give it another couple of weeks and more than likely you will see it starting to get lighter (fade) which in your case is a good thing. Once you have giving your hair some time you and your stylist can re-evaluate and go from there, my suggestion for a short time is to stay away from re-highlighting and get a gloss or a toner with some warmth in it, this will not cause any damage to your hair. And in the meantime invest in color shampoos and conditioners; AVEDA has excellent products for such needs as yours.
