Safe by Rebecca Turbow F/W 2009

Rebecca Turbow's Fall/Winter presentation at the Moeller Snow Gallery was a great success. Hey latest collection, realized in sophisticated greys and black are a testament to Turbow's maturation as a designer and her evolving point of view. Check out a great gallery of photos at Smile Nicky Digital.
Somewhere along the line Rebecca and I have become twins
I am not a photographic talent, this has been established but I can never get over the hottness of Sasha and Jennifer.
Everyone you ever met was there.

Peggy Wang East is back from the first leg of her rock star tour with the Pains of Being Pure at Heart.

New Comics from Vanessa Davis

I've been a huge fan of Vanessa Davis for a years. I read  her  book Spaniel Rage based on a strong recommendation from Jaan Shenberger and it sorta changed my life.  I have since  given many copies of it as gifts to people I am close to.  Patty and I used to run around saying "This is my Spaniel Rage!" at moments when life was most absurd and frustrating.
Her new comics column has debuted on Nextbook with Dyspeptic Academic.   It's about the long term effects of her Jewish School education.

ps Check out the Friends reference. I love it.

pps I live for her.

Post it Note Series: Last Words

So I didn't realize until yesterday that the Starlee and Arthur Review Series that the darling Starlee Kine and the dapper Arthur Jones have been diligently working on for so long launched quietly on the L STUDIO site in September.
These are some of my favorites:

On The Radio

During my time in SF I made a little appearance on my friend Melanie's radio show The Little Wizard Hour on West Add Radio. The best little pirate radio station ever. Stream it, download it or podcast it, learn it, love it, live it.
Here is what we played, though the talking is really the best part we like to fancy ourselves amateur 'shock jocks'. The sound on the first few songs are really quiet but it gets better I swear.FROM THE ARCHIVES: here are my other appearances on the LWH
No pic that time. FAIL. But this is an estimation of what we looked like.

Debaser

Old friends and ex-Neon dudes Jamie Jamz and EmDee's 90s night Debaser at the Knockout is evidently the most bonkerztown bananas party in SF right now.
These photos are all by that Amelie-lookalike, bic pen bike lock-scam-exposing, constant wrist-breaking, collector nerd Chris Brennan, see the full flickr set here. There was a crowd surfing contest, and the prize was a "Smells Like Teen Spirt" 7 inch. The youth are super into the 90s jams. Melanie pointed out that they are to us what we were to people who grew up in the 80s when we going to clubs like 1984.
Mara!
I didn't dress the part, sorry! But you know I didn't have to take advantage of the whole free with a flannel things since I was *ahem* ON THE LIST. I am tres VIP in the SFC.
I love Jesse and Joe getting in on the crowd surfing action, see we are still young!Jaan is really feeling it.
Did I mention I am covered in bruises?
Also some jerk took my coat. WTF! j.crew, long, black, xs. PLEASE RETURN. I only didn't freeze thanks to the chivalry of Colin Koopman. I need it back, its cold in NYC dudes.
UPDATE: my coat was returned thanks to a really nice girl who saw my ad on craigslist. Yay! the internetz are awesome.

Photoshop skillz+ My Friends= MyLifeRulez

I've been meaning to do a roundup of examples of images of my friends that have been photoshopped into hilarity. Here are some of my faves, click images for larger versions.
Michael Silverberg with the head of his catvia If You Can Dream It. You Can Do It.
Melanie gazing fondly at Brooke
I think Nako made this as a flyer for some night she and Melanie did called Nako Mel Grande.Matt Bonar avec JFK
Cinco de hai-o Invite from 2006 by Sarah Grant note the presence of Brian Peppers, fake Sam, Matthew Bice, Jesse Johansen, and Ann Yu.
Some other insanity by Sarah created for some Scrabble Tournament featuring Matthew Bice, Tom Wisdom, Jeremiah aka Knewman, Hai, Sammich, Kelli Townley and Aaron Ottinger.I can't even begin to describe the nonsense that goes on at rocky luten dot comz!
And who could forget the amazing flyer made by Patty for my send off to New York. Note Melanie as Karen O, Matt Roberts as Julian Casablancas, Matt Stromberg as Nick Zinner, as well as David Brooks and Matthew Bice as various Interpols.

Congratulations Starlee Kine

How adorable is that picture. My little Starlee Kine won the Gold Prize at this year's Third Coast International Audio Festival which apparently is like the Oscars of radio. She won for her now infamous This American Life story Dr. Phil. Seriously though that picture looks like its from a fifth grade graduation, like they are about to bust into "The Greatest Love of All."
Listen to it here: Breakup
The story for those of you who don't know involves her calling Phil Collins to ask for help with writing a breakup song. Yeah pretty much the best thing ever.

Her friend Josh hosted a party for her last night at this epic loft in Soho complete with babaganoush and nowandlaters. Unfortunately I had no camera but I may be able to salvage some of the camera phone pics I took.
Also, look what I found while trying to find a larger image of the photo above.
I'm dead. Starlee you killed it. SHUT IT DOWN.

ps. I think Peggy Wang East was wearing that exact outfit the other day, just sayin'

Safe By Rebecca Turbow Spring 2008

I Die. Read the Cool Hunting Post here.
This one reminds me of that photo of Fiona Apple that ran in Spin in 1998. I've been looking for it in this system of tubes we call le interweb and all I find is emo porn. (What, I have an encyclopedia in my head, you try living with it.)

Brooklyn is Burning

Brooklyn is Burning was this crazybananastown art happening at Glasslands curated by my dear friends Sarvia Jasso and Andres Bedoya back in March. I didn't get a chance to write about it back then but I just got my hand on this video of the event and it jogged my memory. It was totally one of those nights where you aren't feeling like going out at all but you want to support your friends, so you drag yourself there. I brought Rebecca Turbow with me and within minutes we were both in the best mood ever. I've been to my share of art "experiences" but Brooklyn is Burning really captured that certain "WHAT THE FUCK!" element of creative expression without feeling pretentious or self important, or even ironic.

This guy chanted stuff like "Positive Actions, Positive Thoughts" while getting naked and patting himself down with an accompanying powerpoint presentation. Then he had a band that played.

I hope they do another one soon.

Safe: The Party

Turbow's SS09 Presentation was a rousing success.

I wore a piece from the previous collection, I felt like a full blown sub-lebrity. I wish I had gotten a photo of the crazy silver shoes I got on ebay, they are cuckoo-bananas.
Carlen of Jewish Rosaries and Peggy Wang East were featured in a video showcasing the collection. SPOILER ALERT: there is side-boobage and panty-shots.

Papabubble created custom candies, and baby Elliot even made an appearance.
All photos by Mark Hunter aka The Cobrasnake. See the rest here.
Still thinking about the side-boobage? Here is the video:
