Prepping Hair For Summer

Summer is approaching and for hair color it is a great time to start prepping the hair before and during the sun, water, heat, and lighter shades added, reds etc. One of the worst mistakes that are made is not preparing the hair before coloring it in the summer months or just before, If you don't take the time to make sure that the ideal conditions are met then you'll be unhappy about the hair color job and health of hair. So why do we need to approach the hair differently? The first thing is that when the warmer weather comes it is a fact that hair color fades faster and highlighted hair gets lighter. The lightening of highlights does not concern me as much in fact I am someone who loves what the sun does to highlighted hair if it is prepped prior, however if it is not prepared the hair becomes dehydrated (dry) and lifeless. The same applies to tints (all over colors) the hair colors not only fade but the actual composition of the hair changes which makes it harder for the tints to stick to the hair.

A hairdresser should take into account the condition of the hair and make sure that the color services whatever route is taking is sealed with glosses and treatments in the salon, with a summer homecare maintenance program i.e. shampoo and conditioner which should be different then their winter regime. Starting in the spring and knowing certain clients hair colors that have the tendencies to have challenges in the summer I like to add glosses and a series of deep hydrating treatments. The hair glosses can either have color to them or clear, I apply them immediately after the color service and continue doing this till the fall. The clear gloss is the one I prefer to use on my highlighted clients this way the actual colors are not altered and the hair is protected with an added bonus of shine. For homecare I suggest products that are specifically designed for protection, from shampoo, conditioner, to even styling aids and I also recommend for home use a protein based treatment for once a week. All this might sound like a lot but we all know how hair reacts in the summer, and if hair is not approached this way it can become disastrous and expensive to fix after the summer is long gone.

The key in successful seasonal hair coloring and happy hair is in the condition the hair is in to begin with, and remembering a simple guideline to prepping the hair;

Condition: Treatment

Color Service: Tints, Highlighting, Perming

Sealing: Glossing

Protection: Shampoo and Conditioner

Style&Finish: UV protection styling aids

WHO: Curly hair of any type
WHEN: Anytime before heat styling
HOW: Squeeze onto palm, work through damp hair with fingers. Blow-dry under high tension to straighten.

hair rut is ova

Hey guys! So I know I've been posting a lot of hair blog posts and how to's, but I was just in this mood to post hair tips although I'm kinda having a bad hair day right now. Anyways, here are some new hair styles and looks you guys can try this upcoming spring. Let me know what you think :) xoxo, Shaina

1) Wear your hair curly! ! ! ! ! ! If you usually go stick straight, mix up your look by scrunching your hair with a curl cream.
2) Pump up the volume- Look glam by teasing hair and your crown for extra height.
3) Slick back your bangs- Pull off a second day hair or help bangs that are growing out by clipping them back.
4) Rock a side braid- Go boho chic with a classic low braid. Give it texture with a tiny dab of styling paste. (oh so Alexander Wang)
5) Roll up your do- More fun than a bun. Roll your hair away from your head in back, and pin. Then twist and pin a front section to the side (tsumori chisato)
6) Super size your bow- Go fashion-y, not little girly, by sliding on a big bowed headband
7) Bump it up- Create an elegant shapy by molding the top section of your hair into a pompadour, then pull sides back.
8) Florals florals florals!!!!- Clip a fun flirty little flower in your hair along your ear.
9) Bun your BRAID- turn heads from behind. Sweep hair into a low bun, leaving a 3 inch wide section, but braid it and pin it around your bun.
10. Bows- Buy a bow made of hair that matches your hair color and wear it low at the nape of your neck to keep it sophisticated (not silly)
11) Fluff your pony- Dress up your everdy pony by gently back combing the tail with a paddle brush for fullness.
12) Straighten Out- If you usually curl your hair- change your look by flattening for a stick straight style with major shine.
13) Bun it high- A super high bun is classic with an edge. Rough it up with your fingers-less perfect is cooler=P
14) Wear a knit band- transition form winter to spring effortlessly by wearing a crocheted headband
15) Get low- A piecey bun is sophisticated and sexy. Secure hair into a messy bun at the nape of your neck, then let a few whispies hang around your face.
16) Bonjour- Wear a bright colored beret.
17) Go girly- Fasten a flower cluster clip atop your ponytail.

super foods

If your gaur is hungry for some TLC, feed it with these yummy recipes, then go for seconds!

Eliminate Frizz: Fruit Smoothie
Potassium-rich bananas and cantaloupes help soften rough strands, while a few drops of olive oil keep hair smooth.
1) mix 1 banana, 1/2 cantaloupe (without rind), 2 tbsp. yogurt, and 1 tbsp. olive oil in a blender.
2) Apply mixture to damp unwashed hair and comb through from roots to tip.
3) Allow it to sink in for 15-20 minutes ans rinse afterwards. Shampoo and condition your hair, and style as usual.

Fix Split Ends: Avocado Mask
To strengthen brittle ends and repair damage, let moisturizing avocado and soothing honey go to work!
1) Combine 1 can of coconut milk (it gives hair tones of shine), 1 mashed avocado, and 1/2 cup of honey in a bowl.
2) Slather the mixture on dry hair, focusing on split damaged ends. Top with a plastic shower cap.
3) Blast your hair with heat from your blowdryer for five minutes, then allow the mask to soak in for an additional 30 minutes.
4) Rinse well but dont shampoo. Style as usual.

Boost Your Color: Coffee Rinse
Coffee intensifies darker shades to make hair really shine! Soak your hair in this rich, dimensional color.
1) Brew any type of plain nonflavored coffee and let it cool.
2) Pour enough coffee over dry hair until hair is completely soaked then comb through.
3) Cover your head with a plastic shower cap and let the rinse for 20-30 minutes.
4) Rinse well, then shampoo. Give your hair a final rinse with cold water to maximize shine.

Hope these tips work girls...AND GUYS! (i dont know why my pictures aren't working).....xoxo, Shaina

hair from grrr to great

Solve your most frustrating hair issues with these instant tricks and long lasting tips.
Annoying Problem:

FRIZZY: Fix it fast!= To tame fuzzy spots, slick on a silicone serum. Rub a dime size drop between your palms, then lightly coat your hair starting at your ends- you'll smooth the hair cuticle and avoid grease overload. (try: Garnier Fructis Style Brilliantine Shine Glistening Drops, $4 at drugstores)
Fix it forever!=Frizz means your hair is dry-your locks are actually gasping for moisture from the air. Use a light hydrating treatment conditioner everyday to repair and seal the cuticle, for a smooth healthy look.  (try: Dove Daily Moisture Daily Treatment Conditioner $5 at drugstores)
LIMP: Fix it fast!= To revive flat hair fast, lift small sections of hair along your crown and use a rattail comb with tiny teeth to back-comb along your roots and boost volume. Mist hairspray onto your comb to give teased hair extra staying power! (Try: Anti-Static Finishing comb $3, drugstores).
Fix it forever!= Get crazy-full hair with a thickening treatment. Once a week, saturate dry hair with the product-leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse and shampoo. The collagen and proteins plump up the hair shaft. (try: Umbierto Beverly Hills Colagen Pre-Shampoo Treatment $10, target.com

SPLIT ENDS: Fix it fast!= Seal split ends by rubbing a pea size bead of smoothing cream between dry, brittle spots. The extra moisture adds instant shine. (try: Bumble and Bumble Brilliantine $20, bumbleandbumble.com
Fix it forever!= Sway your regular shampoo for this treatment cleanser once a week to heel split ends and help revive hair damaged by heat or chemicals. Lather, then rinse and follow with your usual conditioner. (try: Neutrogena Triple Moisture Split-End Mender Liquid Balm $7, drugstores).
OILY: Fix it fast!=If your hair gets oily midday or after gym class, sprinkle a shampoo powder along your part and hairline to sop up any oil. Gently massage it into your scalp. (Try: Ojon Rub-out Dry Cleansing powder $24, Sephora).
Fix it forever!= Control oil by washing with a clarifying shampoo once a week. Look for formulas that have peppermint-it works like an astringent to remove any gunky oil. (try: C.O. Bigelow Menthow Hair Mint-Infused Invigorating Shampoo $12, bathandbodyworks.com)
